Hamilton, Montana (June 24, 2016) – A new wildfire on the Bitterroot National Forest was reported about noon on June 24. The Observation Fire, located uphill of the Lost Horse Observation Point is 10 miles southwest of Hamilton and believed to be lightning caused. Smoke from is visible from the valley floor. The fire is estimated to be about one acre in size and is burning in steep terrain.

Two engines, an eight person hand crew and a Type 3 helicopter were dispatched to the fire. After sizing up the fire, the helicopter left the fire as wind made it unsafe for the helicopter to be in the vicinity. Wind, snags and the steep slopes are making firefighting difficult.

The Bitterroot is currently in “Moderate” fire danger. The pubic is reminded that if they build a campfire while enjoying the Forest, do not leave it unattended. Please make sure the fire is dead out before leaving.

As the Fourth of July approaches, a reminder that fireworks are prohibited on all National Forests. For the safety of the public and our Forest, please remember that fireworks can create a potentially dangerous fire situation.
