Who Can Request a Birth Certificate
Montana law allows a certified birth certificate to be issued only to:
- Self
- Mother
- Father (if listed on the certificate)
- Spouse
- Grandparents (with proof of relationship)
- Child
Caretaker relative, guardian, an authorized representative, or those who provide documentation showing it is needed for determination or protection of the individuals personal or property rights. Proof of relationship, guardianship, caretaker relative, or authorization is required to obtain a certified copy of a birth record.

Uncertified Copies
Uncertified (informational) copies can be issued for births that have occurred 30 years prior to the date of the application. In Ravalli County we still need to know the relationship of the person requesting the copy.
Fees
- Certified Copy - $8 plus .50 for postage
- Informational Copy - $ .50 plus .50 for postage
Required Information For Requests
Each
request for a certified or informational copy of a birth certificate must be in writing and must contain the following information:
- Registrant’s full name
- Date of Birth
- Mother’s maiden name
- Applicant’s relationship to the registrant
- Reason for the request
- Signature of the applicant
- Copy of applicant’s driver’s license or other photo identification
